Information Technology (IT) has fundamentally changed many aspects of our lives and it will continue to do so at an ever-increasing pace. As most people use this technology without even understanding its most basic concepts, our information society faces a new problem: digital illiteracy. What does it mean to process information? How can you best make use of IT? What are its benefits and what are its dangers?
During this weekend, you will learn about the functioning of hardware and software, the difference between the Internet and the Web, and the security of information through cryptography. We will visit the computer museum ENTER and hear from the former data protection officer of the Canton of Zug, Dr. iur. René Huber, about privacy in the big data era. For the practical exercises, participants are required to bring a laptop along.
Language: The lectures will be in English, the tour through the museum in German.

Preparation: Though not mandatory, skimming through the lecture slides in advance is highly recommended. You will also need to install a few tools on your laptop before the seminar.
