We all spend almost one third of our time during sleep but most of us know and care not much more about it than by personal experience and how tired or fit we feel. While the physiological principles of sleep are extremely interesting, often not clear yet and the consequences of conditions disrupting them extreme, sleep also has many other linked consequences such as the effects of sleep on our economy, as, for example, sleep scientists during their early phase advised companies to improve sleep efficiency of their shift workers. Also a more broad impact of sleep can be asked: is good sleep only something, the wealthy can enjoy? How can school schedules be adapted to optimal sleep patterns of children and adolescents? In this reading group, we‘d like to understand sleep as a complex bio-psycho-social phenomena in a interdisciplinary way. Our readings will focus on short papers, the history of sleep science, early studies by Sigmund Freud, philosophical background and also a musical approach.
